TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto has pledged to provide decent housing for residents currently living on the fringes of the railway tracks in the Kramat area of Pasar Senen, Central Jakarta. He made the promise during a visit to the settlement on Thursday, March 26, 2026.
According to Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya, Prabowo is determined to ensure that those living by the tracks gain access to proper homes. "The President wants to build decent housing for residents who still live on the edge of the railway, just three kilometers from the heart of Jakarta," Teddy stated.
Prabowo conveyed this promise directly to the residents he encountered on the ground. Several locals later recounted the President's commitment to the presidential media team.
Cono, a scavenger and local resident, confirmed he had a individual conversation with Prabowo. "Pak Prabowo asked, 'Would you like to be provided with an apartment?' I said I would, because I don’t have much of a place to live. This is the reality," he said, as quoted in a press release regarding the visit.
Responding to the pledge, another resident of the railway embankment, Ibu Seger, expressed her hope of one day occupying more dignified housing, such as an apartment. "I have lived here for a long time; if there is an apartment available, I want to live in it. If there is one, perhaps I won't have to live by the rail tracks anymore," she told the media team.
Ibu Seger explained that financial constraints make it impossible for her to rent more decent housing, as she earns her living by busking every day. "I can't afford a persewaan contract; my income is only just enough. If I can't pay the rent, I get evicted. So I stay here by the tracks, and I endure it," she said.
Prabowo also conveyed the promise in a post on his IG account, @prabowo. In the post, he shared a video capturing his walk through the trackside community in Kramat.
"God willing, we will soon build decent housing for the people in that area quickly, and it is my determination to provide proper housing for all the people of Indonesia," the Gerindra Party Chair affirmed.
