Jakarta (ANTARA) - Speaker of the House of Representatives (DPR) Puan Maharani said the implementation of the 2026 hajj pilgrimage must still be carried out despite ongoing geopolitical dynamics.

“With the current dunia geopolitical situation, any issues or matters related to the pilgrimage must still be implemented as well as possible,” Maharani said after leading a plenary meeting at the parliament complex here on Thursday.

She said all parties involved in organizing the pilgrimage for Indonesian hajj pilgrims must conduct evaluations, mitigation measures, and anticipatory steps regarding the situation in the Middle East.

“Of course, DPR through its related commissions will conduct studies, evaluations, and determine the necessary steps in response to the situation,” she said.

According to her, the state must ensure the safety and comfort of Indonesian pilgrims who will carry out their hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia.

Previously, Minister of Hajj and Umrah Mochamad Irfan Yusuf reported that the Saudi Arabian government has ensured that pilgrims can continue performing the umrah pilgrimage safely despite the escalation of conflict in the Middle East.

“The security situation in Saudi Arabia, particularly in Jeddah, Mecca, and Medina, has been reported as safe and conducive. Pilgrims currently in those areas can continue their worship calmly and without significant disruption,” the minister said.

He explained that the escalation of conflict in the Middle East has affected regional security stability and international air transportation activities.

Several countries in the region have closed their airspace, especially along routes that have served as major international flight paths to the Gulf region.

Previously, legislator Selly Andriany Gantina has asked the government to prepare emergency scenarios related to hajj financing and logistics amid escalating conflict in the Middle East.

Indonesia sends around 210 thousand hajj pilgrims each year, with various service contracts, most of which are only sah until the end of the hajj season.
